What is up everyone? It is the Jarl StijnFawkes here and before I get started with the actual writing I want to ask you something? Do you want to be a leader? Do you want to be the boss? It feels good being the boss right? You’re the man. The head honcho. Everyone has to do whatever you tell them to do. Feeling good?
Ok now let me burst that bubble for you. Here we go.
Being a leader, a tribal leader to be more specific in my case, can definitely be a lot of fun. People calling you jarl, acknowledging you as the leader of the Tribe, looking up to you. Yeah that’s awesome. But that’s not all being a leader is about. Being a leader means you have to set the example. It means that it’s also your responsibility when things go in a different direction than planned. You are a representation of the Tribe. Both good and bad.
And I have to be honest with all of you. This shit is hard. We have had a few periods of struggle within the Tribe of the Greyhorn Pagans. People who were coming in with less than honorable intentions. People coming in with less than favorable views on a certain relgious group known for wearing small hats. Having an open roundtable and trolls coming in trying to sabotage your stream. Not many people will think of these thing when they decide they want to be the boss.
Ask my wife about out final period with Heathens of Oath and Honor. We were planning on going legit with the group so of course we had to appoint a figurehead. Someone who would take on the majority of the responsibilities and be the face of the group going forward. So we did. We choose the eldest member and the one who started the group. And you know what happened? Power got to him right away. It went straight to his head and blew up his ego even further than it already was.
This is what happens with so many people who get some sort of a title. Whether it be in the workplace, in your Discord group, or a tribe. They get the feeling of being all high and mighty and they make desicioins that either benefit only themselves are nobody at all. But don’t you dare question why they made that decision.
This is another reason why my wife and I started the Tribe of the Greyhorn Pagans. We were sick and tired of being told what we could and couldn’t do or say. Sick and tired of constantly being punished for “being out of line”. I took those frustrations, made them into lessons and made sure I wasn’t going to repeat any of the mistakes made by people who I formerly looked up to as a leader.
Although I do have to say that a leader is only as good as the people he/she surrounds themselves with. If not for my beautiful wife, my right hand man
and voice of reason I wouldn’t be the jarl I am today. If I wasn’t the jarl who I am today we would have never succeeded as tribe. If we would have never succeeded as tribe we would have never become The Grove of Odin.I’m just saying it is a domino effect. If you do good by others they will do good unto you. If you prove yourself a worthy and fair leader people will want to follow you. It is a rare thing in the outside world, but at the Tribe of the Greyhorn Pagans this is the norm. We acknowlege tradition. We ackowledge traditional roles and rules. So we must keep those and act accordingly.
